The Encyclopedia Project of Functions connects to the Common Core State Standards. Everything learned in the Common Core Standards of Math from grades K-6 are used to help build the foundational knowledge students need to be able to fully understand what a function is and all the ways to use functions. But, functions are indirectly taught before grade 6 as well through other content areas. In 4th grade, under Operations and Algebraic Thinking, students have to solve multi-step word problems where they have to use letters to stand for an unknown quality. In all functions they use letters to represent specific numbers but in specific linear functions. Fox example, linear functions sometimes have word problems such as finding how much money you would owe your cell phone company when you use x to represent how many minutes you talk per month. Simple examples like that use basic knowledge from common core standards that will stem back to functions.
Students need to understand how to do basic math such as that in order to be able to learn about functions and understand them. Functions stem from equations. Students must also know what makes an equation and what makes something equal. This is something that students learn from the Common Core standards that are used all the way up through learning about Functions. In 6th grade, students also must use variables to represent two quantities in a real world problem. They must also be able to one as the dependent variable and one as the dependent variable. This is extremely important when dealing with functions because most functions have a dependent and independent variable. They also in 6th grade have to analyze the relationship between the dependent and independent variables based on tables and graphs. For one to tell what type of function it is based on a table, one must be able to analyze the table. This is something taught in 6th grade but continues to build all the way up until high school and college. It just goes to show how the Encylopedia Project which is something done in college, connects to the Common Core Standards and information that is learned from 3rd grade and up. All this information stems on previous knowledge learned that will continually come up again.
